Inception

I love mind benders.

I really enjoy watching movies that twist your preconceived notions and completely turn your brain upside down.  I suppose it’s because you can easily make a film that’s nothing but explosions and gun fights between a designated hero and tons of men and women who are otherwise shown to be evil.  But it takes a little more effort to craft something that requires you to follow along very carefully, something that was made to stimulate the brain more than a few gun fights down a flight of stairs.

Which makes Inception an interesting case, since you have a mind thriller with gun fights sprinkled in.

To me, Christopher Nolan is a tricky person to talk about.  I have a few of his movies (Insomnia, The Prestige, The Dark Knight series thusfar), so it’s a challenge to write something about him without sounding entirely biased.  His films go beyond mere gun fights and actions sequences, as The Prestige can accurately demonstrate.  One feature of his movies is his morally grey protagonists; characters that have done bad things before or even during the film’s events.  In a way, this makes his films…

Yeah, my math teacher was weird back then…

I will say, though, after all the good things I’ve mentioned about the film: it was really, really, really long.  It’s necessary, but you need to plan accordingly for it.

Man, it feels like I’ve been watching really long movies for the past few weeks.

I guess the next logical step will be to harp on The Godfather Part II.

Ha.  Just kidding.

Or am I?
